Here's why giving a 2-weeks' notice isn't necessary
So recently I’ve been quoted again for a HuffPost article and it’s on the topic of the infamous “two-weeks’ notice”.
💭 Is it necessary or outdated?
Here are my thoughts:
A two-weeks’ notice = a ~courtesy~ notice of your resignation
This means it is up to you to decide if you like to give that courtesy to your employer.
Although in reality, two weeks is not nearly enough time to interview candidates, hire the most qualified, and train a new employee. So I’m not even sure what impact this notice *really* has.
📝 Here are some helpful things to consider once you’ve decided it’s time for you to go:
Did you have a positive, neutral, or negative experience with this organization?
Does this role actively endanger or compromise your mental, emotional, or physical health?
Would you like to use this organization as a reference or keep them in your back pocket to work with in the future?
Are there other opportunities you’d rather be exploring at this time?
With all of those things kept in mind, if you feel like a clean break is what’s best for you, then you don’t need anyone else’s permission to do so.
And if the bridge is already burnt and you don't plan on using them for a reference, I say fuck it. 🤷🏽♀️
“Your health and wellness is worth more than not burning a bridge or connection with an employer that actively hurts you, puts you down, and does not give realistic, manageable work expectations,” Nadia De Ala, HuffPost
Most employment in corporate and retail are "at-will". This means they have the right to dismiss/terminate you for any reason*, without warning, at any time.
*except for anything illegal (ie: discrimination, violation of federal/state law)
If you read your employment contracts closely you will most likely find that at-will clause in there.
